Wow. We did it. Took the family to Oktoberfest. Or more commonly known here as Weisn (which translated means "meadow" because the huge area now annually used for Oktoberfest was once just an open field).
What an experience to take part in a tradition that has been held annually (except for a few years surrounding World Wars, etc when Wiesn was canceled or downgraded to a small festival) since 1810. More than 6 million people visit it - and it only takes place for 2 weeks out of the year!
Tuesday was "family day," and we went early enough that the crowds weren't too overwhelming. Even still, the girls walked around bug-eyed and awe-struck at the people, the rides, and of course, the treats being sold everywhere. :)
Lebkuchenherz (gingerbread heart cookies) are extremely popular...given as a gift, worn around the neck, and containing a special message. Fun tradition (see further down...Micah bought them for all of us girls!)
This ferris wheel is quite a popular ride, but look closely at the crowds and you might find someone familiar. He fits in quite well with his lederhosen. :)
There is a section called Oide Wiesn (historical section) that is especially great for families. The rides were old fashioned - mainly carousel types that originated from the 1920's. The girls loved them! (Confession: so did I.)
While Kate and I went on a swinging boat ride together, Micah snuck Val and Elsie away to buy some heart cookies...
Elsie was so excited she didn't even wait to get the wrapper off before digging in!
Outside Oide Weisn, we walked through the main street where the beer tents are. They are amazingly decorated - its hardly a tent, in my mind!
Love this sign:
We came out of wandering around inside a tent to see that the famous horses we'd seen pulling the beer wagons at the parade were out on show! The girls were so excited to pet these beautiful animals!
What a day! Just a couple of hours of fun completely knocked this girl out. She slept the whole way home and then some...
