Venice, Elegant Decay

Early last Thursday morning Micah caught a flight to Venice for work (his 3rd trip there). Then, early Saturday morning, I caught a flight and met him there! Thank goodness for half-term break and for a husband who enjoys staying places for the weekend so that his wife can join him in his travels!
Honestly, I thought our days of heading over the continent ended with our trip last August, but this was an opportunity too good to pass up! I landed at Marco Polo airport just before 11 and by 11:30, the taxi dropped me off at the only car-park area in Venice. Micah met me there and together we navigated the alleys, canals, and bridges, winding our way to the opposite side of the island towards St Mark's Square where our hotel was located.

The view from our room:Venice is a lovely city, romantic and full of life. It consists of 400 bridges, 2,000 alleys and loads of little islands! Instead of cars, there are boats. Boats for deliveries, buses, taxis, garbage, everything! It has perfect places to sip a cappuccino and watch the day go by, or grab a slice of pizza for take away (followed by gelato for dessert) and watch as you walk. But the 1,500 year old city is slowly sinking and decay is setting in. You can see it in some of the photos below.
We had beautiful weather and enjoyed a peaceful 3 days together! On our way back to the airport on Monday evening, we stopped at one of Venice's islands called Murano. It is famous for its glass making, and we saw a factory where the glass was being blown and shaped in-action. It was fantastic. What a lovely visit! Enjoy the photos!
St Mark's Basilica:

The Bridge of Sighs - unfortunately had construction up all around it! Bummer! I looked forward to seeing this because we'd already seen the two re-constructions of it in England (Oxford & Cambridge), so to see the real one was fantastic!

On the boat to Murano:

Murano - famous for its glass!

Love your pictures! venice was one of our favorite cities to visit. It's so romantic and old European. And all that glass! We wanted to buy so much more than we could fit in our backpacks. I'm so glad you got to visit!

I think it looks beautiful and so shocking to think nothing has sunk. Keep on enjoying these last few months in Europe while you can. And just so you know Cappucino's are going to become your best friend in the following months. :) Love you both.
